West Salem, Wisconsin (Historic Salem)

In West Salem, Wisconsin, this older home located at, 99 E. Jefferson St, is noted as Historic Salem. The founder of West Salem, Thomas Leonard, built this home in 1859. The painted crosses protecting the house from witches still remain. It's open 7 days a week with no admission. Inside are many of Leonard's possessions, an antique shop and book store. Many books by the Pulitzer Prize winning author Hamlin Garland are for sale as well. The Hamlin Garland estate is just a few miles from this location. This home is Stop 1 on the Wisconsin Rustic Road tour. If you do stop in, look for the King Cobra, don't worry though, he won't strike!

If you would like to make a donation on behalf of this location, you can at:

There are these tiny blue flowers all over the property, we were told that they only last a week or two so, we were lucky to get these shots

Elvis was in the building but, he was not the King in this castle.

The real KING of this castle!

30,000 Books and counting

Leave your laptop behind! This historic home we visited had over 30,000 books! Children's books to Reference books! I was amazed and so was my kid. We LOVE to read and to us, this was one amazing stop. Well worth the visit, this home also was filled with antiques. Read the West Salem blog post to learn more!

Another Haunting

There is a book, "The Haunting of Sparta" by Joe Cook that has this house in it. It is located on Spring street about 3-4 blocks from Water Street. I talked to the person who lives here and she told me it was a woman and her 2? children. I was also told that the Strawberries and Lace B&B (pictured below) was the original families 2nd home but, the woman liked the 1st home better, therefore choosing to "Haunt" it instead.

Haunted, Wisconsin

My neighbor took me on a "spooky" adventure to a place many dare never to go. I am not going to say where this place was but, I will say that it was once a sanitorium. There are a lot of curves and hills throughout this area and I got a sense of "I shouldn't be here" If you believe in hauntings, blow up the image and see if you can see all the faces staring out at you!
This outing sparked me to start a book....you can begin reading it here :
